The Sea, in M. K. Ciurlionis’ paintings

Andreja Stankunaite, Neda Straigyt, Aurelija Petrulyt

Klaipeda University

A pantomime performance with dance elements, as a Tribute to Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, a renowned Lithuanian composer and painter. This unique performance draws inspiration from Čiurlionis’ symphonic poem ‘The Sea’ and his painting cycle Sonata Nr. 5 (Sonata of The Sea). The cycle, consisting of three paintings, evokes a range of emotions—both playful and dramatic—while portraying the sea as a powerful, mysterious, and at times destructive force. The performance reflects on nature’s immense power, serving as a reminder that the sea—and nature as a whole—should not be exploited. Just as the sea can overwhelm and reclaim, nature will eventually return the damage humanity has inflicted.
