Scuba diving for scientific research in coastal waters
This SRH project focuses on scientific scuba diving as a tool for coastal marine research. It combines an online preparatory phase with an intensive on-site experience in Calpe (Spain), where participants take part in supervised scientific dives, underwater sampling, data collection, and the use of specialised oceanographic equipment in different coastal habitats. The programme brings together students from different universities in an international setting and connects theoretical foundations with hands-on fieldwork supported by professional oceanographers.
The course is aimed at university students with an interest in marine sciences, oceanography, marine biology or related fields, particularly those who want to gain practical experience in scientific diving and field-based coastal research within a multidisciplinary and international academic environment.
General learning outcomes
After successful completion of the BIP, students will be able to:
- Plan and organise scientific diving activities within coastal research projects
- Apply underwater sampling methodologies in oceanographic and marine biological studies
- Apply quality assurance and quality control procedures in scientific diving activities
- Use and maintain scientific diving and oceanographic equipment in compliance with safety standards
- Collect, record and interpret underwater scientific data in infralittoral ecosystems
- Collaborate effectively in international and multidisciplinary academic teams
