Dr Mohammad Ahmed Qureshi, a postdoctoral researcher from Frederick University (Cyprus), has completed his research mobility at La Rochelle Université (France) within the EU-CONEXUS Enables project. His research focuses on developing a Digital Twin framework for coastal Smart Energy Communities, exploring how renewable energy can be used more efficiently and sustainably.

During his mobility, Dr Qureshi worked under the supervision of Prof. Jérôme Le Dréau, using the Les Minimes district of La Rochelle as a case study. His research addressed a particular challenge faced by coastal communities: significant seasonal fluctuations in electricity demand driven by tourism.

Combining artificial intelligence, electricity demand and solar energy forecasting, and mathematical optimisation, Dr Qureshi developed a simulation framework to explore how energy sharing between buildings, community battery storage and flexible electricity consumption could help reduce energy costs. The research also compared different electricity-sharing approaches and resulted in an offline Digital Twin prototype capable of simulating various energy scenarios.

Beyond the scientific achievements, the mobility provided valuable opportunities for international collaboration, knowledge exchange and professional development. Dr Qureshi particularly appreciated the welcoming research environment, the support of his supervisor and the opportunity to experience life in La Rochelle.

Through research mobilities such as this, EU-CONEXUS Enables supports knowledge exchange, strengthens collaboration between partner universities and advances innovative solutions to sustainability challenges facing coastal communities.
