Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Ecosystems serve as rich repositories of biodiversity, hosting diverse species and fostering genetic abundance. These environments also yield valuable metabolites with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and various other industries. Activities carried out during this SRH research project will involve preparing extracts and conducting detailed biochemical characterization. We will assess total phenolic content via the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, measure flavonoid content by using the aluminum chloride method, and estimate chlorophylls a and b, as well as total carotenoids concentration, spectrophotometrically. Extracts’ antioxidant activity will be evaluated through two widely recognized assays: TEAC and FRAP. Additionally, in vitro experiments on human cell lines will explore the cytocompatibility of the produced extracts and determine a safe concentration range for usage. The well-established MTT assay will be utilized in vitro cytotoxicity assessments, encompassing a broad range of extract concentrations and varied incubation durations. Focusing on biochemical characterization and in vitro testing will allow to unveil a variety of potential applications of ecosystem-derived extracts.

General Learning outcomes

  • Ability to design an experimental procedure for the biochemical characterisation of extracts.
  • Laboratory-based training and practical experience in state-of-the-art laboratory techniques.
  • Awareness and application of screening techniques of bioactivity (in vitro-methods, in vivo-methods, biomass extraction).
  • Awareness of key biotechnological applications of bioactive molecules in human health and nutrition or personal care products (cosmeceuticals, cosmetics).
  • Ability to analyse and interpret experimental data.
  • Personal progress in group/team work, autonomous work, and working in a multidisciplinary environment.

EU-CONEXUS was represented at the Begin Edu Fair i EU-CONEXUS was represented at the Begin Edu Fair in Cairo by @utcbro colleagues Cristian Rusanu and Lavinia Turcu, helping prospective students and Egyptian partners learn more about study opportunities within UTCB and EU-CONEXUS. 🇷🇴🇪🇺🇪🇬

From 12–15 November 2025, representatives of the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB), together with 10 other Romanian universities, took part in events promoting Romanian higher education.

The UTCB delegation included Cristian Rușanu, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering in Foreign Languages, and Lavinia Turcu, Interim Director of the International Relations Office and EU-CONEXUS Communication & External Relations Coordinator.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in:

▶️ A meeting with the Romanian Ambassador to Egypt, H.E. Olivia Toderean, discussing priorities and opportunities for strengthening 🇷🇴–🇪🇬 academic cooperation
▶️ An exchange of best practices with Prof. Dr. Ezzat Samy Aziz on student recruitment, mobility, research, and joint projects
▶️ The Begin Group International Education Fair at InterContinental Citystars Cairo, attracting hundreds of students interested in studying in Romania
▶️ Visits to leading Cairo high schools to present Romanian university programs
▶️ Presentations on Romania’s higher education system and opportunities for international students
▶️ Networking sessions with Egyptian institutions seeking collaboration

UTCB thanks all organizers and partners for the productive discussions and cooperation that made this visit a success.

Such initiatives are essential for advancing the internationalization of Romanian higher education and building sustainable global partnerships.

Antibiotics has been the #1 infection treatment fo Antibiotics has been the #1 infection treatment for generations now. 💉

One could explore different scenarios by asking, “What if they didn‘t exist?”, but the truth is even harder: some of them no longer work. 😳

As infections become more resistant, scientists all over the world are on a mission to find other alternatives. And as a recent study by researchers at Waterford Institute of Technology shows, seaweed could be our saviour.
