Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization, and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Ecosystems serve as rich repositories of biodiversity, hosting diverse species and fostering genetic abundance. These environments also yield valuable metabolites with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and various other industries. Activities carried out during this SRH research project will involve preparing extracts and conducting detailed biochemical characterization. We will assess total phenolic content via the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, measure flavonoid content by using the aluminum chloride method, and estimate chlorophylls a and b, as well as total carotenoids concentration, spectrophotometrically. Extracts’ antioxidant activity will be evaluated through two widely recognized assays: TEAC and FRAP. Additionally, in vitro experiments on human cell lines will explore the cytocompatibility of the produced extracts and determine a safe concentration range for usage. The well-established MTT assay will be utilized in vitro cytotoxicity assessments, encompassing a broad range of extract concentrations and varied incubation durations. Focusing on biochemical characterization and in vitro testing will allow to unveil a variety of potential applications of ecosystem-derived extracts.

General Learning outcomes

  • Ability to design an experimental procedure for the biochemical characterisation of extracts.
  • Laboratory-based training and practical experience in state-of-the-art laboratory techniques.
  • Awareness and application of screening techniques of bioactivity (in vitro-methods, in vivo-methods, biomass extraction).
  • Awareness of key biotechnological applications of bioactive molecules in human health and nutrition or personal care products (cosmeceuticals, cosmetics).
  • Ability to analyse and interpret experimental data.
  • Personal progress in group/team work, autonomous work, and working in a multidisciplinary environment.

There is a lot of talk about what children eat at There is a lot of talk about what children eat at school.🍽️

But how many of us know where that food comes from?

A recent study from @klaipedauniversity explored the “Farm-to-school” model – an idea built around connecting schools with local farmers and creating shorter, more transparent food supply chains. 🧑‍🌾

The concept sounds simple, but the reality is more complicated. 🧐

The good news? Farmers already know what’s slowing the shift down.

Discover what stands between local farmers and school canteens – and why fixing it would bring much more than better nutrition for children. 👧👦

How can European University alliances move beyond How can European University alliances move beyond project-based cooperation and create long-term impact for universities, regions, and society? 🤝

These questions were at the centre of the high-level discussion “Sustainability of European University Alliances: From Ambition to Long-Term Impact”, hosted by EU-CONEXUS partner @klaipedauniversity during the international conference “Social Innovations for Sustainable Regional Development”.

Alliance leaders from EU-CONEXUS, FORTHEM, SEA-EU, CHARM-EU and ENHANCE came together to discuss sustainability, governance, institutional integration, and the future of European university collaboration. 🇪🇺🌍

The discussions once again highlighted that the strength of alliances lies not only in joint projects, but also in continuous dialogue, trust-based cooperation, and a shared vision for long-term impact.

On 7th of May, we celebrated the final Disseminati On 7th of May, we celebrated the final Dissemination Conference of the IamSTUDENT project, bringing together more than a hundred students, educators, and policymakers from across Europe to reflect on a journey that has transformed ideas into real experiences within EU-CONEXUS. 🌍🎓✨

From the Inter-Campus Life Roadmap to practical tools and pilot initiatives, this project has helped turn cross-border education into something tangible and everyday.
But the real impact always comes from the students. Who better than them to share their own experiences? 💬

From the JMPMB to sports, art, micro-credentials schools, and festivals—their stories showed what European identity truly means when it is lived, not just designed. 🧬🎨⚽

As this project chapter closes, one message stands out: belonging to EU-CONEXUS starts from day one when students join their universities. 💙

EU-CONEXUS had a strong presence at @frederick_uni EU-CONEXUS had a strong presence at @frederick_university Career Fair, where more than 45 companies showcased exciting career opportunities to students. 🚀

Beyond connecting with top employers and exploring potential career paths, students had the chance to attend inspiring talks by alumni and industry professionals, as well as hands-on workshops designed to strengthen their skills — from AI and CV building to essential soft skills.

Students also discovered more about EU-CONEXUS’ career platform, JobTeaser, and the opportunities it offers. To make things even more exciting, three lucky students who registered on the platform won amazing prizes through a draw! 🎉 Congratulations to the winners!
