Solid state Materials characterization techniques for research – characterization of Alginate/graphene bioactive formulations
This Student Research Hub aims to give a practical and hands-on experience in the method development, sample preparation and analysis of materials using key modern physical characterization techniques including Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD).
General learning outcomes
- Apply a range of analytical techniques—including DLS, DSC, TGA, SEM, FTIR and XRD—to characterise the physical, chemical and thermal properties of bioactive materials.
- Interpret experimental data from thermal, structural and morphological analyses to evaluate material stability, degradation patterns and functional performance.
- Enhance proficiency in written and oral communication within a particular field, utilising specialised terminology.
