Reproductive Biotechnology: Cell Assessment, Cryopreservation and Data Interpretation
Reproductive biotechnology is an important field in biomedical sciences. It connects cell biology, laboratory practice, fertility assessment, assisted reproduction, and fertility preservation. Reproductive cells and biological samples can provide useful information about reproductive health and fertility-related outcomes. Their evaluation is important both in research and in clinical laboratory practice.
This Student Research Hub introduces students to basic principles and selected applications of reproductive biotechnology. The main focus will be on reproductive cell assessment, sample processing, cryopreservation, quality control, and interpretation of laboratory data. The Hub is designed as a fully remote undergraduate activity and will combine online teaching, guided exercises, short quizzes, case-based discussion, and literature-based presentation.
During the sessions, students will become familiar with reproductive cell biology and the basic characteristics of gametes. They will also learn how biological samples are handled and processed in reproductive biotechnology and assisted reproduction workflows. Special attention will be given to cell assessment, semen parameters as an example of reproductive cell evaluation, cryopreservation principles, fertility preservation, and factors that may affect sample quality.
The Hub will also introduce students to the importance of quality control, accurate reporting, and data interpretation in biomedical laboratory practice. Environmental and lifestyle factors affecting reproductive health will be discussed through simple examples.
The course concludes with a literature-based exercise and final student presentation, allowing students to synthesize theoretical knowledge, laboratory concepts, data interpretation, and scientific communication in a structured format.

| On-site training at: | Frederick University |
| Assessment method: | Summative assessment based on active participation, short quizzes, guided case-based exercises, literature analysis, and final presentation. Students will analyse selected laboratory examples, reproductive biotechnology case studies, and one scientific paper related to the Hub topic. Evaluation will consider understanding of core concepts, ability to interpret scientific and laboratory information, quality of literature analysis, participation in online activities, and clarity of scientific communication. |
| Prerequisites for participating students: | Basic knowledge of biology, cell biology, physiology, biomedical sciences, biotechnology, or a related life-science discipline. Basic computer skills are required, as all activities will be delivered remotely. Students should have access to a computer and a stable internet connection. |
| Certification: | EU-CONEXUS certificate of attendance |
