Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Extract preparation, Biochemical Characterization and In Vitro Testing of Extracts

Ecosystems serve as rich repositories of biodiversity, hosting diverse species and fostering genetic abundance. These environments also yield valuable metabolites with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and various other industries. Activities carried out during this SRH research project will involve preparing extracts and conducting detailed biochemical characterization. We will assess total phenolic content via the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, measure flavonoid content by using the aluminum chloride method, and estimate chlorophylls a and b, as well as total carotenoids concentration, spectrophotometrically. Extracts’ antioxidant activity will be evaluated through two widely recognized assays: TEAC and FRAP. Additionally, in vitro experiments on human cell lines will explore the cytocompatibility of the produced extracts and determine a safe concentration range for usage. The well-established MTT assay will be utilized in vitro cytotoxicity assessments, encompassing a broad range of extract concentrations and varied incubation durations. Focusing on biochemical characterization and in vitro testing will allow to unveil a variety of potential applications of ecosystem-derived extracts.

General learning outcomes

  • Ability to design an experimental procedure for the biochemical characterisation of extracts.
  • Laboratory-based training and practical experience in state-of-the-art laboratory techniques.
  • Awareness and application of screening techniques of bioactivity (in vitro-methods, in vivo-methods, biomass extraction).
  • Awareness of key biotechnological applications of bioactive molecules in human health and nutrition or personal care products (cosmeceuticals, cosmetics).
  • Ability to analyse and interpret experimental data.
  • Personal progress in group/team work, autonomous work, and working in a multidisciplinary environment.

@utcbro has successfully hosted two Erasmus+ Blend @utcbro has successfully hosted two Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes!

41 international students and staff from 10 Erasmus+ partner universities were welcomed in Bucharest for two innovative programmes:

🔹Eco-Physics in Construction for a Sustainable Future
🔹Applied Physics in Construction: from Bio-Generation to Energy Insulation

These BIPs brought together participants from across Europe to explore sustainable solutions in construction, combining physics, engineering, and creativity in an international environment.

📚 The experience blended:

✔️ Virtual preparation sessions
✔️ Hands-on laboratory activities (bio-energy lab & insulation box challenges)
✔️ Technical visits (including ELI-NP and EFdeN Sustainable Houses)
✔️ Cultural experiences in Bucharest
✔️ Final team projects addressing real-world sustainability challenges

💡A special highlight was the physics laboratories, where students:

• Generated electricity using microbial fuel cells from soil
• Tested and compared thermal insulation materials
• Collected and analyzed real experimental data
• Transformed lab results into innovative sustainable building solutions

🤝 Beyond academics, the programmes fostered intercultural exchange, collaboration, and new friendships, reinforcing the spirit of Erasmus+.

👏 Congratulations and A big Thank You to all involved in the success of this event!
