Evaluation of suitable olive cultivars for sustainable urban gardens
This Student Research Hub project explores the identification of olive cultivars that are most suitable for urban gardens, assessing key ornamental characteristics and resistance to biotic and abiotic factors. By combining a literature review, field research, leaf and canopy photography analysis, and stakeholder surveys, this research will collect data that will contribute to sustainable urban gardening practices. The results will advance the understanding of specific characteristics of olive cultivars in urban conditions and equip the future researcher with advanced skills in conducting field trials, morphological (quality trait) and survey data analyses, and statistical evaluation of data.
General learning outcomes
- Better identification of olive tree cultivars that combine aesthetic appeal with tree hardiness, providing scientifically based recommendations for urban gardens.
- Improved competences in literature review (Mendeley Reference Manager), field research, analysis of leaf traits, remote collaboration, survey design, and statistical analysis (TIBCO Statistica).
- Enhanced skills in olive cultivar selection and maintenance of olive trees to achieve sustainable urban gardening.
- Improved skills in scientific writing and presenting results.
