Data analysis in physical oceanography

Data analysis in physical oceanography

Data analysis in physical oceanography

This Research Student Hub aims to provide basic methods used for analyzing and displaying a variety of oceanographic data using the open-source software Ocean Data View. Using In-situ data gathered by CTD and managing existing oceanographic databases, by means of differenttypes of plots it will be inferred the distribution of the physical properties in the ocean (profiles, sections, T-S diagrams). An introduction to geostrophic flows calculation using temperature and density profiles will also be explored.

General learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Create an oceanographic database using the given software and the data collected during an oceanographic cruise.
  • Analyze physical properties such as temperature, salinity, and density using profiles, sections, and T-S diagrams.
  • Calculate geostrophic flows based on the dynamic method (thermal wind equations).

For 𝗠𝗮𝗾𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗔𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗱, it was the combination of theoretical learning, practical experience, industry engagement, and exposure to international research that made all the difference.

Having graduated from the Joint Master's Programme in Marine Biotechnology, Maqbool explains how the programme provided a strong foundation for his current PhD research and helped him develop both the scientific knowledge and practical skills needed for a career in research.

His experience shows how interdisciplinary learning and real-world collaboration can prepare students for opportunities well beyond graduation.

🎓 Five EU-CONEXUS Enables PhD students. One inspir 🎓 Five EU-CONEXUS Enables PhD students. One inspiring week of learning, collaboration and new connections.

Our entire EU-CONEXUS Enables PhD cohort took part in the 6th EU-CONEXUS PhD Summer School at Frederick University in Nicosia, Cyprus, joining doctoral researchers from across the EU-CONEXUS European University Alliance.

This year’s theme, “AI for Impact: From Smart Tools to Ethical Decision-Making,” encouraged participants to explore how artificial intelligence can support research across different scientific disciplines while working in international and interdisciplinary teams.

Beyond the academic programme, the Summer School provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen the EU-CONEXUS Enables PhD community, exchange ideas, and build connections that can grow into future research collaborations.

We are proud to see our PhD researchers becoming part of a vibrant international community and look forward to following their journey! 🌍💙
