Chemistry and in vitro Bioactivity of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

Chemistry and in vitro Bioactivity of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

Chemistry and in vitro Bioactivity of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

Natural products are a rich source of bioactive compounds, with a significant number of commercially available drugs derived from them. These molecules, known as secondary metabolites, are produced by plants for defence against predators and for protection against extreme weather conditions. Their unique structures and activities make them valuable starting points for drug discovery. The study of natural products involves many fields, including chemistry. Natural products chemistry is a distinct area of chemical research and plays an important role in pre-clinical and clinical studies for drug discovery research.

In pharmaceutical research, natural products are essential because they provide prospective pathways for the discovery of novel medicinal molecules and have yielded excellent outcomes.

Natural products possess diverse pharmacophores, stereochemistry, and metabolite-like properties. Their chemical diversity provides potential for discovering novel compounds with varied properties. Unique biological activities, synergy, and complexity make them valuable for addressing disease targets and combating drug resistance.

During this research project, students will perform the isolation of secondary metabolites from various plant materials/natural products. Students will learn how to select the most appropriate techniques and solvents to isolate the desired groups of compounds, while ensuring, at the same time, the highest recovery of secondary metabolites. Extracts will be tested for their total phenolic and flavonoid content, as well as for their antioxidant activity.

This hub will enhance students’ research skills, foster collaboration among EU-CONEXUS partners, and promote innovation in the use of natural products for health applications.

General learning outcomes

  • Adherence to laboratory safety protocols.
  • Select and apply correct methodologies for the extraction of secondary metabolites.
  • Learn to create hypotheses and design experiments to evaluate the bioactivity of the extracts.
  • Analyse and evaluate experimental results to draw logical conclusions.

When we speak of ozone pollution, the conversation When we speak of ozone pollution, the conversation usually focuses on humans. 🧍

But according to scientific research, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. 😱

Ozone is invisible but very powerful: it quietly alters plant chemistry, reshapes insect communities, and affects the soil systems that feed every living creature on land.

Impactful, right? 😉

The “problem” is that, unlike deforestation or oil spills, ozone works subtly.

New research shows how this invisible gas moves through ecosystems – from leaves to insects to the soil that sustains them. It also raises important questions for biodiversity strategies, land management, and environmental policy.

How can we manage the impact of ozone to create a better, greener future for our planet? 🤔

Today we are proud to highlight the journey of Ale Today we are proud to highlight the journey of Alexandre Camino, the first doctoral candidate to engage in a co-tutelle within the entire EU-CONEXUS Alliance. Through joint supervision between @univlarochelle 🇫🇷 and @unirostock , he has opened a new chapter in how we design and deliver doctoral education across Europe.

This is a functional example of institutional integration. By aligning supervision and academic standards across borders, we have created a degree framework that is fully embedded within the European Research Area.

Alexandre’s research in Public Management addresses critical sustainability challenges through a comparative study of municipal waste management across France, Germany, and Ireland. His work directly contributes to our core mission of advancing Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability #SmUCS through applied, transnational research.

🤝 While structural integration is a major achievement, the true value lies in the collaboration it fosters. In Alexandre’s words:

“A cotutelle is a fantastic opportunity... but beyond the academic benefits, it’s about connecting people. Seeing researchers from different countries collaborate on shared challenges - that is what the spirit of this alliance is all about.” - Alexandre Camino

We congratulate Alexandre on this achievement, which serves as a blueprint for the future of collaborative research within our Alliance.

🫨 When an earthquake strikes, every minute matters 🫨 When an earthquake strikes, every minute matters.
In densely populated urban areas, the difference between chaos and coordinated response comes down to one criterion – preparation.

Unknown to many, Bucharest is one of Europe’s most seismically vulnerable capitals. With thousands of outdated buildings, complex infrastructure, and uneven access to emergency resources, the city is an easy target for disaster. 🌆❌

Up for the challenge of turning it around, a trio of researchers from the @utcbro took this matter into their hands. Their approach builds on data analysis to suggest a clear action plan for everyone – accessible within seconds on any smartphone. 📲

And the best part is – this model is built to work for your city, too.
