AI at School: Research Applications for Sustainability

This Student Research Hub invites pre-service teachers – students of education science, pedagogy to explore the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in fostering sustainable educational practices. Through hands-on inquiry and collaborative projects, participants will investigate how AI technologies can support inclusive, equitable, and environmentally conscious learning environments.

The lab will focus on:

• AI for Sustainable Pedagogy: examining how AI tools can personalise learning, reduce educational waste, and promote lifelong learning.
• Ethical and Responsible AI Use: understanding the implications of AI in schools, including data privacy, bias, and digital equity.
• AI-Driven Solutions for Global Goals: designing classroom applications that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as climate education, resource optimization, and social justice.

Participants will engage in guided research, case study analysis, and project development, culminating in a showcase of AI-integrated lesson plans or school-based interventions. The lab encourages critical reflection, creativity, and interdisciplinary thinking, empowering future educators to become leaders in sustainable innovation.

General learning outcomes

• Find four AI tools that support the implementation of sustainable pedagogies in a classroom.
• Summarise two of the most up-to-date ethical approaches to the use of AI in schools.
• Identify the SDGs that most closely align with an ethical and sustainable use of AI at schools.
• Design a learning situation where AI is used that fosters sustainable educational practices.
