Returning to campus after the summer or stepping onto it for the very first time can feel like a big moment. That’s exactly why Connect Fest (15–16 September 2025) and Re-Connect Fest (3–4 February 2026) were created at SETU’s Waterford, Carlow and Wexford campuses — to turn those first days into something welcoming, lively and full of possibility. Supported through the EU-CONEXUS IamStudent project, both festivals provided an informal setting where attendees could connect with one another while also learning more about key initiatives. Designed with all students in mind — from bachelor to PhD — as well as academic and professional staff, the festivals were all about connection, community and opportunity.
Fun and Opportunity Laden
At the heart of both events was a vibrant games day, offering a relaxed and informal space for students and staff to meet, chat and have fun. But beyond the friendly competition, there was a deeper purpose: introducing students to the wide range of opportunities available through EU-CONEXUS and the IamStudent initiative.
With EU-CONEXUS information stands placed in high footfall areas, attendees could easily drop by to learn more about micro-credentials, minor programmes, PhD Summer School, Student Research Hub and Open Lab Hours, mobility opportunities, career supports such as JobTeaser and “Kick-Start Your Career” events, and arts and culture initiatives. By blending information with interaction, the events made learning about these opportunities feel natural and engaging rather than formal or overwhelming.
A Collaborative Campus Effort
Connect Fest and Re-Connect Fest were delivered through strong collaboration between Student Services, the EU-CONEXUS team, and campus partners including the Peer2Peer mentor group, Access Office, Disability Office, and Clubs and Societies.
Over a 6–8 week preparation period, more than 25 staff members contributed to planning, promotion and delivery. The events were promoted widely through email campaigns, posters, student newsletters and Moodle/Blackboard, ensuring strong visibility across campuses. Competition entries surpassed 120 participants, while footfall reached into the hundreds, reflecting a highly engaged audience and strong event turnout.
Real Conversations, Real Impact
One of the standout successes was the peer-to-peer engagement model. During Re-Connect Fest, student ambassadors played a key role in creating authentic, approachable conversations. Their involvement helped spark genuine interest and made EU-CONEXUS initiatives feel accessible and relevant.
By embedding EU-CONEXUS into a social and welcoming setting, the festivals reached students who may not typically attend formal information sessions. Instead of simply hearing about opportunities, students experienced them as part of campus life.
Beyond attendance, the events strengthened something less tangible but equally important — a sense of belonging. Students connected not only with services and opportunities, but with each other, building friendships, networks and a shared identity within the wider European university alliance.
Looking Ahead
Connect Fest and Re-Connect Fest demonstrated that student engagement doesn’t have to be formal to be effective. Sometimes, all it takes is a game, a conversation and a welcoming atmosphere to turn awareness into action — and a campus into a community with EU-CONEXUS at the heart of it.
