Sleep quality and Nutrition
This course explores how sleep and nutrition interact to influence health, performance, and well-being across the lifespan, with a focus on sustainable, evidence-based practices. Students will examine sleep physiology (circadian rhythms, sleep stages, and sleep debt) alongside nutrition science (timing, energy balance, macronutrients, micronutrients, and hydration), as well as how lifestyle choices impact sleep quality. Core topics include the role of meal timing and composition in sleep, the influence of caffeine, alcohol, and stress, sleep disorders, and nutrition strategies for different populations (students, shift workers, and older adults). The course emphasises critical appraisal of research and the translation of findings into practical, culturally sensitive recommendations.
Learning outcomes include critical literacy in sleep and nutrition science, the ability to design personalised and sustainable routines, and the development of practical strategies for healthier communities.
By the end of the course, students will be able to assess and analyse their own sleep quality and dietary patterns, and design personalised, evidence-based routines that optimise sleep while considering cultural relevance and environmental sustainability. They will also be able to critically appraise sleep and nutrition research and effectively communicate practical, scalable recommendations to diverse audiences and settings.
Learning outcomes:
- Analyse the interrelationships between sleep quality and nutrition, and apply evidence-based, culturally relevant recommendations to improve personal and community health in a sustainable manner.
- Design and implement personalised sleep and dietary plans that are practical, scalable, and environmentally conscious, incorporating timing, composition, and lifestyle factors.
- Critically evaluate scientific literature on sleep and nutrition, and effectively communicate findings and guidance to diverse audiences and settings.
