Invasive Alien Species: morphometrics and feeding ecology
The rapid expansion of the Lessepsian invaders poses severe threats to Mediterranean marine ecosystems, fisheries, and public health.
This Student Research Hub project introduces undergraduate and master students to scientific procedures for assessing the ecological impacts of invasive alien species like Lionfish (Pterois miles), Rabbitfish (Siganus luridus and Siganus rivulatus), Blue-spotted Cornetfish (Fistularia commersonii) and Silver-Cheeked Toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus). The curriculum consists of 12 hours of online interactive lectures focusing on the dynamics, and management of marine biological invasions, followed by a 3-day on-site laboratory workshop (6 hours/day, 18 hours total). During the workshop, students will perform hands-on examinations of individuals, including morphometric, dissection, and feeding analysis. Trainees will use taxanonomic key identification guides for species identification and will use simple descriptive statistics to interpret the results which will be presented as powerpoint. This structured workflow equips future researchers with critical skills in marine ecology taxonomy, quantitative data analysis, and teamwork.
