South East Technological University (SETU) hosted its first Foundation Day event on 1 May, marking four years since its establishment as a university. EU-CONEXUS was highlighted as part of the event’s theme, “Making Impact: Connecting to Europe”, showcasing SETU’s European engagement.
EU Commissioner Michael McGrath, keynote speaker, reaffirmed the vital role universities play in shaping Europe’s future and delivering EU priorities in research and innovation, education, digital transformation, democratic participation and regional development. He also highlighted the role of EU-CONEXUS and the European Universities Initiative as a key delivery agent for transnational collaboration, student mobility and joint educational initiatives.
Commissioner McGrath said, “I am honoured to mark SETU’s Foundation Day. The University has brought real benefits to the South East region, to Ireland and across Europe. SETU represents universities at their best. It drives innovation and research, connects deeply with its region while engaging internationally, and contributes to the broader European project.”
The event also included a panel discussion titled “SETU: Making Impact and Connecting to Europe in the Year of the Irish Presidency of the EU Council.” Dr Helen Murphy, SETU’s Executive Lead for EU-CONEXUS and Head of the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning, joined panellists representing higher education, research and regional development.
Dr Murphy’s participation reflects the importance of EU-CONEXUS membership within SETU. The University is leading the Alliance on the creation of a Joint Masters in Leadership for Sustainable Urban and Coastal Development to ensure that educational offerings align with evolving European skills and sustainability priorities.
EU-CONEXUS was chosen, alongside the Research Office and the International Office, as part of an exhibition of SETU’s European engagement.
The EU-CONEXUS team at SETU showcased activities related to joint education and research, as well as inter-campus community engagement, with student stories demonstrating the impact of short mobilities and blended learning experiences through the Alliance.
