Jean-Marc Ogier, President of La Rochelle Universitรฉ and of the European University EU-CONEXUS, took part in the final conference of the European Status for European Universities (ESEU) project, held on 28 February in Brussels.
The conference marked the conclusion of the ESEU project, an initiative exploring the possibility of creating a European legal status for the European Universities Alliances. Bringing together representatives of the European Commission, higher education institutions, university associations and student organisations, the event provided an opportunity to discuss the project’s outcomes and future perspectives.
A roadmap for closer European cooperation
During the conference, participants presented the results of pilot initiatives carried out throughout the project, as well as the final ESEU roadmap, which outlines possible directions for the development of a common legal framework for European university alliances.
The roadmap is the result of extensive collaboration between project partners and stakeholders across Europe. It identifies opportunities and challenges related to strengthening long-term institutional cooperation between universities while supporting the ambitions of the European Universities Initiative.

A common legal framework could facilitate cooperation between partner institutions by supporting joint governance, shared academic activities and the long-term development of integrated European campuses.
The discussions held in Brussels highlighted the collective commitment of European higher education institutions and policymakers to further strengthening cooperation and exploring new ways to support the future of European university alliances.
