Theoretical Approaches to Ecological-Cultural Change

Theoretical Approaches to Ecological-Cultural Change

Theoretical Approaches to Ecological-Cultural Change

Dates & timetable:

“Approachesโ€ introduces interdisciplinary perspectives and core areas for analysing the material and cultural dimensions of contemporary crises, such as the climate crisis and environmental degradation, as well as their socio-cultural and economic effects. The module comprises a lecture series and seminar covering a wide range of academic fields and perspectives such as: literary and cultural studies, ecological economics, media and ecology/sustainability, agrarian and landscape economics, education, and maritime ecology.

A special focus is placed on core theories of environmental humanities and (literary) ecocriticism, and how these intersect with, for instance, postcolonial approaches, human-animal studies, or Indigenous studies.

In hearing from, and discussing with lecturers from various departments, students learn to recognise and differentiate between core academic fields, topics, and concepts in the ever-developing domains of ecological sustainability, eco-cultural change.

Date Time
13 October 2025 to 26 January 2026 (no classes from 22 December to 4 January)

Mondays, 5:15 to 6:45 pm,

Description:

This interdisciplinary lecture will provide students an insight into various theoretical and disciplinary approaches to topics such as culture, ecology, sustainability, change, and their interdependencies. Each week a different lecturer will present an introduction to these topics from their respective disciplinary perspective. Contributing fields may include literary and cultural studies, philosophy, law, political science, landscape ecology, marine biology, agrarian ecology, classical philology, and archaeology. External experts will round off the program.

The aim is to enable students to identify different methods and analytical frameworks for critically engaging with the material and cultural dimensions of global climate and ecological crises, their historical and sociological dimensions, and the solutions proposed by each field. The โ€œculturalโ€ topics, at the intellectual center of this program include human-animal relations, energy cultures, literary ecocriticism, Indigenous and postcolonial approaches to ecological sustainability, and critiques of environmental racism.

The lectures will help students become familiar with the various tools for analyzing the current cultural-ecological situation within a global context, and for thinking creatively about its temporal dimension, including its history and its future.

Learning outcomes:

Subject-related competences

  • Knowledge of different disciplines dedicated to sustainability research and their methodologies, principles and working methods

    Methodological competences
  • Ability to analyse historical and contemporary issues relating to ecology, sustainability and cultural change and their representations
  • Ability to reflect on the theory of science in relation to interdisciplinary work on sustainability
  • Knowledge and ability to analyse common models and statistics from other subject areas
  • Cultural-scientific and text-critical analysis and interpretation of the above-mentioned phenomena and their media representations
    Interdisciplinary competences:
  • Ability to transfer subject-specific theories and methods to objects and issues in related humanities and natural science subjects
  • Ability to integrate various specialist skills
  • Core qualifications:
  • Methodological awareness
  • Analysis and transfer skills

When we speak of ozone pollution, the conversation When we speak of ozone pollution, the conversation usually focuses on humans. ๐Ÿง

But according to scientific research, thatโ€™s just the tip of the iceberg. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Ozone is invisible but very powerful: it quietly alters plant chemistry, reshapes insect communities, and affects the soil systems that feed every living creature on land.

Impactful, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

The โ€œproblemโ€ is that, unlike deforestation or oil spills, ozone works subtly.

New research shows how this invisible gas moves through ecosystems โ€“ from leaves to insects to the soil that sustains them. It also raises important questions for biodiversity strategies, land management, and environmental policy.

How can we manage the impact of ozone to create a better, greener future for our planet? ๐Ÿค”

Today we are proud to highlight the journey of Ale Today we are proud to highlight the journey of Alexandre Camino, the first doctoral candidate to engage in a co-tutelle within the entire EU-CONEXUS Alliance. Through joint supervision between @univlarochelle ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท and @unirostock , he has opened a new chapter in how we design and deliver doctoral education across Europe.

This is a functional example of institutional integration. By aligning supervision and academic standards across borders, we have created a degree framework that is fully embedded within the European Research Area.

Alexandreโ€™s research in Public Management addresses critical sustainability challenges through a comparative study of municipal waste management across France, Germany, and Ireland. His work directly contributes to our core mission of advancing Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability #SmUCS through applied, transnational research.

๐Ÿค While structural integration is a major achievement, the true value lies in the collaboration it fosters. In Alexandreโ€™s words:

โ€œA cotutelle is a fantastic opportunity... but beyond the academic benefits, itโ€™s about connecting people. Seeing researchers from different countries collaborate on shared challenges - that is what the spirit of this alliance is all about.โ€ - Alexandre Camino

We congratulate Alexandre on this achievement, which serves as a blueprint for the future of collaborative research within our Alliance.
