Nitrogen translocation in the soil profile as affected by long-term fertiliser management and cover crops

This 60-day on-site training offers undergraduate students practical experience in environmental and agricultural science, focusing on nitrogen dynamics in soils. Participants will explore how long-term fertiliser practices and winter cover crops – specifically oil radish and phacelia – affect nitrogen leaching and soil nutrient distribution. Through field sampling, lab measurement, and data analysis, students will gain insights into sustainable agricultural practices aimed at enhancing soil nutrient retention and mitigating the environmental risks associated with N leaching.
General learning outcomes
- Understanding of the effect of long-term fertilisation management on soil characteristics.
- Improved literature search and management skills.
- Improved data analysis and data visualisation skills.
- Understanding and mastery of laboratory approaches for measuring soil mineral nitrogen content.
- Improved scientific writing and presentation skills.
